Who is being vaccinated now?

With the rollout of the vaccine in Jamaica, there is now access for Citizens ages 75 years and over and parish council representatives who are 60 years and older, to set their appointment.

Before this stage Health care workers and other frontline workers were vaccinated. This process started online on March 22, 2021 at 10 am. The Ministry of Health and Wellness target for this stage is 30,951.

So far, the numbers have shown that majority of those registered are indeed citizens 75 years and older. There were also a small number of frontline workers registered.

Where can I sign up for the vaccine?

The main platform that should be used is the Ministry’s website at https://jamcovid19.moh.gov.jm/vaccination.html .

Seeing that majority of this age group may not be able to access the online platform efficiently, there is access to call 888-ONE-LOVE/888-663-5683.

Can I still sign up if my age group does not have access as yet?

It is highly recommended to wait until your specific age group arrives to visit the scheduling platform or call the hotline. This helps to prevent congestion for both platforms and promotes a smooth process for current and future citizens.

As the year 2020 ended and 2021 began, we heard great news of new vaccines available worldwide for Covid-19. However, no matter how great the news, not a lot of Jamaicans are willing to take it readily. This is because there has always been several myths and rumors about the vaccine that has caused fear.

THE COVID-19 VACCINE CAN AFFECT WOMEN’S FERTILITY.

This Myth was created on social media and is indeed false, according to scientist, the vaccine affects other forms of proteins that the immune system fights. The vaccine does affect fertility but, women who are pregnant are at high risk and their babies as well.

IF I HAVE COVID I DO NOT NEED THE VACCINE.

Covid is very danger for persons with other major health issues, and though they had already contracted the disease it is still possible for them to contract it again. Therefore, as the old saying goes, ‘Prevention Is Better Than Cure’.

THE VACCINE WAS CREATED TOO FAST AND NOT SAFE.

This is indeed false as though the vaccines were created in a shorter time than usual, we must remember that technology has evolved over time which assisted in the shorter time for the vaccine, additionally, no steps in the testing process were skipped. All steps were done as they would have been if the vaccine took 10 years to fully develop.

WHEN I GET THE VACCINE, I NO LONGER NEED TO WEAR A MASK.

Even though your body I unable to aid the virus into becoming covid-19, coronavirus can still enter the body. And there is no actual proof yet if that cannot be transmitted if you are vaccinated.

GETTING THE VACCINE FOR COVID IS ACTUALLY GIVING YOU COVID.

There are a lot of conspiracies out there stating that covid is not real and they are using the vaccine to cut down the population. This is indeed false and not a fact. The two authorized mRNA vaccines tell your cells to reproduce a protein that is part of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which aids your body, to recognize and fight the virus, if it comes along.

THE VACCINE SIDE EFFECTS ARE DANGEROUS AND DEADLY.

This is another myth that comes with vaccines in general. But unless you have some sort of allergies not known when taking the vaccine, there is no major threat. Some persons feel pain after taking the vaccine, but scientist note this means the vaccine is working.
